Award Recipient: Dr. Christine Bird, Ph.D.
Dr. Christine Bird has been honoured with the First Nation Administrator Award from the Aboriginal Financial Officers Association of BC (AFOA). This award recognizes her exceptional leadership, financial management, and dedication to fostering growth and stability within SȾÁUTW̱ (Tsawout) First Nation.
Dr. Bird joined SȾÁUTW̱ during a time of instability, stepping into the CEO role amid staff shortages, high turnover, and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Her leadership has brought stability, accountability, and growth to the nation.
Dr. Bird implemented cultural awareness training for all staff, developed a strategic plan with Chief and Council, and fostered a workplace culture that prioritized stability and retention. By supporting and empowering managers, she encouraged innovation, grant applications, and financial accountability.
Under her leadership, SȾÁUTW̱ achieved major milestones:
- Health Accreditation in 2022 and Financial Management System Certification in 2024.
- Purchased 100 acres of land for reserve expansion
- Helped secure funding to built 46 new housing units
- Presided over the purchase and launch of a businesses including a whale-watching company, and kelp farm.
- Rebuilt the Bighouse 13 years after its loss to fire.
- Doubled staff from 55 to 110 and increased the budget from $8.8 million in 2018 to $21 million in 2024.
Dr. Bird’s dedication has strengthened SȾÁUTW̱ First Nation, empowering individuals, preserving cultural heritage, and setting the stage for long-term success.
