community engagement session #1 on indigenous protected and conserved areas (IPCA)

On March 26, 2026, the SȾÁUTW̱ Fisheries Department hosted a community dinner to introduce and discuss the QEN,T Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA), creating space for community members to learn, ask questions, and contribute to the stewardship plan for these waters. This video, now shared for those who were unable to attend or wish to revisit the discussion, explains how the IPCA is a SȾÁUTW̱ community-led initiative grounded in traditional knowledge, laws, and responsibilities, focused on protecting ecosystems, strengthening cultural connections, and supporting sustainable use of these waters. It highlights the purpose of the IPCA in affirming stewardship and jurisdiction, the importance of a community-driven stewardship plan, and key priorities such as food sovereignty, fisheries management, restoration, economic opportunities, and vessel activity—all while encouraging ongoing community input to help shape its future.
