Community Initiatives and Events Manager
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership & Program Development
- Lead the development and implementation of community initiatives and events that align with the Nation’s strategic priorities, cultural values, and community-identified needs.
- Collaborate with leadership, departments, and community members to identify opportunities for initiatives that strengthen community wellness, engagement, and cultural continuity.
- Develop annual operational plans, including goals, timelines, and measurable outcomes for initiatives and events.
- Ensure programs and events reflect and uphold cultural protocols, traditions, and teachings.
Operational Management & Program Delivery
- Oversee the planning, coordination, and delivery of community events, gatherings, and celebrations, including cultural events, seasonal activities, and community engagement sessions.
- Develop detailed event plans, including logistics, budgets, risk management, and contingency planning.
- Coordinate vendors, service providers, venues, and internal resources to ensure seamless event execution.
- Maintain a master calendar of community initiatives and events; coordinate dates, venues, and scheduling to minimize conflicts and support effective planning and promotion.
- Ensure accessibility, inclusivity, and safety at all community events.
People Leadership & Team Development
- Supervise, mentor, and support staff, contractors, and volunteers involved in community initiatives and events.
- Provide direction, training, and performance management to ensure high-quality service delivery.
- Foster a collaborative, respectful, and culturally grounded team environment.
Community Engagement & Cultural Stewardship
- Build and maintain strong, respectful relationships with community members, Elders, youth, and partner organizations.
- Facilitate meaningful community engagement opportunities, ensuring voices are heard and reflected in program and event design.
- Ensure all initiatives and events are grounded in and respectful of the Nation’s culture, language, and traditions.
- Engage Elders and Knowledge Keepers in the planning and delivery of culturally significant activities.
Partnerships & Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with internal departments to support cross-program initiatives and integrated service delivery.
- Represent the Nation in external partnerships and community events as required.
- Develop partnerships with external organizations, cultural groups, and service providers to enhance programming opportunities.
Financial Oversight & Program Administration
- Develop and manage program and event budgets, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with funding agreements.
- Monitor expenditures and provide regular financial reporting to leadership.
- Coordinate procurement, vendors, service providers, and venues to support effective program and event delivery.
- Identify and pursue funding opportunities, sponsorships, and partnerships to support community initiatives.
Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting
- Establish performance measures and evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives and events.
- Gather participation data and community feedback to inform continuous improvement.
- Prepare reports for leadership, funders, and community on outcomes and impacts.
Governance & Compliance
- Ensure all initiatives and events comply with applicable policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Uphold confidentiality and ethical standards when working with community information.
- Support leadership in reporting and accountability requirements related to funded programs.
Cultural Stewardship & Community Wellbeing
- Ensure programs and events reflect and uphold cultural protocols, traditions, and teachings.
- Promote community wellness, inclusion, and intergenerational connection through programming.
- Support culturally safe, welcoming spaces that strengthen connection and community engagement across all age groups.
- Establish performance measures and evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives and events.
- Gather community feedback to inform continuous improvement.
- Prepare reports for leadership, funders, and community on outcomes and impacts.
Communications & Outreach
- Oversee the development and distribution of communications related to community initiatives and events.
- Ensure timely and accessible communication through multiple channels (e.g., social media, newsletters, community postings).
- Collaborate with the Communications team to create event materials and coordinate promotion plans to maximize awareness and participation.
- Work with communications staff to promote participation and awareness of programs and events.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Diploma or degree in Event Management, Community Development, Recreation, Social Services, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 4–6 years progressive experience in event coordination, community programming, or related roles, including supervisory experience.
- Experience working within Indigenous communities or organizations is strongly preferred.
- First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Valid driver’s license and ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of culturally grounded, community-based programming approaches, including incorporating culture, language, and traditions into events and initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and deliver multiple events and initiatives concurrently, from concept through evaluation.
- Strong project management skills, including work planning, scheduling, logistics coordination, and follow-through.
- Ability to engage and collaborate effectively with Elders, youth, families, staff, volunteers, contractors, and external partners.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed, culturally safe, and inclusive engagement practices; ability to create welcoming and accessible community spaces.
- Budgeting and financial administration skills, including cost estimation, tracking expenditures, and working within funding allocations.
- Vendor, contract, and procurement coordination skills, including obtaining quotes and managing service providers.
- Knowledge of event risk management, including safety planning, emergency procedures, and contingency planning.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparing reports, summaries, promotional content, and clear instructions for staff and volunteers.
- Data tracking and evaluation skills, including collecting participation data and community feedback to support continuous improvement and reporting requirements.
- Proficiency with common office software (e.g., email, spreadsheets, calendars, and document tools) and comfort learning organization-specific systems.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, and to operate effectively in dynamic, fast-paced environments.
