Invasive Plant Removal Event

In partnership with CRD, the Fisheries Department successfully organized another invasive plant removal event. With a fantastic turnout of 47 enthusiastic volunteers, the team removed over 1,500 lbs of invasive plants—Scotch Broom and Dalmatian Toad Flax—from the sensitive coastal sand ecosystems.

Check out the incredible before and after photos below! Due to the success of this event, we’re already planning the next one on October 16th, 9 AM – 12 PM. If you’re interested in joining, please signup below.

IPCA Dungeness Crab Surveys

The Fisheries Department is conducting ongoing Dungeness crab surveys around Sidney and James Island, as part of the IPCA project. This research aims to better understand local crab populations, helping us manage and protect this vital species for future generations. The results of these surveys will guide sustainable practices for harvesting and conservation.

Water Sampling in Tetayut Creek Watershed

Water sampling efforts continue in the Tetayut Creek watershed to monitor water quality and assess ecosystem health. This monthly program aims to identify the best strategies for restoring the watershed and increasing salmon populations. Tetayut Creek is still a salmon-bearing stream, home to spawning Coho Salmon and Cutthroat Trout, demonstrating the resilience of these species. Our goal is to improve the habitat further and help these populations thrive once again.

Electrofishing in Reay and Tetayut Creek

Electrofishing surveys were conducted in both Reay and Tetayut Creeks to monitor fish populations and assess the health of these ecosystems. This work provides valuable data on the species present and their abundance, supporting our efforts to restore and maintain healthy habitats for local fish species.
