POSITION: Head Start Early Childhood Educator
HOURS OF WORK: Monday – Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm
REPORTS TO: Head Start Coordinator and Director of Education
WAGE RANGE: $30 – $35 / Hour

The Head Start Early Childhood Educator (ECE) is responsible for the development and delivery of culturally informed, developmentally appropriate programming to support the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of children aged 0-6 and their families. Reporting to the Head Start Coordinator and the Director of Education, the ECE provides holistic support to children and their families and community in a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment, working in collaboration with families, community members, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers to integrate W̱SÁNEĆ cultural values and SENĆOŦEN language into Head Start programming.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Development & Delivery

  • Plan and implement developmentally appropriate, culturally responsive, play-based educational programming for children aged 0-6 years old.
  • Create a family-friendly environment that provides safety and security for children and families.
  • Provide a daily balance of active/quiet, indoor/outdoor and individual/group activities.
  • Provide opportunities for parents/caregivers to observe and practice effective strategies that support early learning.
  • Develop and implement kindergarten readiness programming for children aged 3-6 years old.
  • Develop, implement, and facilitate education related workshops or information sessions for families.
  • Create, compile, and assemble learning curriculum resources.
  • Plan and implement activities/interventions for each family/child, including referrals to specialized services.
  • Implement recognition activities to celebrate achievements.

Community Engagement and Communications

  • Provide early leaning and care information to families and the community.
  • Promote community wellness and act as a liaison for specialized services for families.
  • Provide information about programming to the community through newsletters, announcements, and community engagement events.

Partnerships & Collaboration

  • Collaborate with families, community members, Elders, Knowledge Keepers and language teachers to integrate SENĆOŦEN language, W̱SÁNEĆ cultural teachings, and land-based learning into the curriculum.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to provide support to children and families.
  • Make referrals to specialized services as needed.

  • Knowledge of child development, family dynamics, community resources, and early learning.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Valid ECE license to practice in the province of BC.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience working in a childcare setting.
  • Registered member in good standing with the BC Early Childhood Registry.
  • Experience working with First Nations, preferably in an Education or Human Services role.
  • Current First Aid & CPR and Food Safe Level 1.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector screening.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Office-based with use of standard office equipment
  • Indoor/outdoor.
  • Extended periods of standing or walking.
  • Occasional lifting (up to 40lbs).
  • Bending, kneeling.
  • Occasional travel for meetings and events
  • Occasional evening or weekend work to meet community and organizational needs
