Home Care Aid
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Client resources and client assessments and will perform job duties once client is formally assessed and referred by designated social and health professionals as requiring one or more of the designated essential services using the care assessment criteria.
- Nursing care: includes things such as monitoring blood pressure and blood sugar, giving medications (including injectable medications), and changing dressings to injuries or surgical wounds.
- Personal care: Can help with bathing, dressing, mobility exercises and eating. Personal care also includes transportation to various appointments of a health-related nature.
- Housekeeping services: A Home Care Assistant will come in once or twice a week to help with the heavy housework. Some clients are seen more often due to special needs. Our homecare assistants provide tasks such as sweeping and washing floors, washing the client’s dishes, cleaning the bathroom and changing the bed linens.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Certificate in Home Care Aide
- Minimum Grade 10 education.
- Proper home care techniques for house cleaning and meal preparation.
- Knowledge of different cleaning products/chemicals.
- Record of up-to-date Flu Shot Immunization and TB testing on file.
- Criminal Record Check – Must pass an Enhanced Criminal Record check within 15 days of hire.
- Valid First Aid/CPR Certification.
- Food Safe Certification.
- Valid WHMIS Certification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of personal care and assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, feeding, and safe mobility support.
- Knowledge of basic clinical tasks within scope, such as taking and recording vital signs, blood glucose monitoring, medication assistance/administration as authorized, and simple dressing changes.
- Knowledge of infection prevention and control practices, including routine precautions, hand hygiene, and safe handling/disposal of contaminated materials.
- Knowledge of safe lifting, transfers, and body mechanics; ability to use mobility aids safely and support mobility exercises as directed.
- Ability to observe, recognize, and promptly report changes in a client’s condition, safety risks, or concerns to the appropriate health professional/supervisor.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including active listening, clear verbal and written reporting, and respectful engagement with clients and families.
- Ability to provide culturally safe, trauma-informed, and client-centred care, demonstrating respect for W̱SÁNEĆ culture and community protocols.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and accurate documentation in accordance with organizational policies and privacy requirements.
- Skills in meal preparation and safe food handling (Food Safe), including accommodating dietary needs and supporting nutrition and hydration.
- Skills in housekeeping and home support tasks, including safe use/storage of cleaning products and chemicals (WHMIS), and maintaining a clean and safe home environment.
- Ability to plan and prioritize daily tasks, follow care plans and instructions, and work independently with minimal supervision in a home setting.
- Ability to manage competing demands and maintain calm, respectful service during challenging situations.
- Dependability and reliability, including punctuality, consistent attendance, and flexibility to meet client scheduling needs.
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel between client homes (if required), including safe transport support for health-related appointments.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Working conditions include providing care in clients’ homes, with regular travel between locations. The position is physically active and may involve lifting, assisting with mobility, and completing personal care and housekeeping tasks. The Home Care Aid may be exposed to illness and must follow infection-control and safety procedures. Schedule flexibility may be required to meet client and organizational needs.
