POSITION: Summer Program Leader – Summer Student Position
HOURS OF WORK: Monday to Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm, June 29 to August 21, 2026
REPORTS TO: Summer Program Coordinator
WAGE RANGE: $20.00/Hour

The Summer Program Leader works with the Summer Program Coordinator to provide literacy, numeracy, cultural, language, active living, and life skills supports to children and youth during the summer months, and create a safe, nurturing, and fun environment where children can explore culture, language, build confidence, and develop social and learning skills through hands-on, age-appropriate activities. This is an 8-week summer student work experience position from June 29 – August 21, including paid training sessions during the first week.

Applicants must be between the ages of 15 and 30, have attended full time school this year and will be returning to attend full time school in the fall of 2026.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Facilitate interactive, inclusive and developmentally appropriate literacy, numeracy, active living, land-based, arts, and language activities.
  • Create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Supervise and mentor children and youth, ensuring their safety, well-being, positive behaviours, and active participation.
  • Build positive relationships with participants through encouragement, patience, and active engagement.
  • Manage group routines (snack time, transitions, breaks) to maintain structure and a sense of security.
  • Ensure all activities follow safety guidelines and organizational policies.


CORE COMPETENCIES

  • Strong understanding of culturally grounded learning practices that uphold the community and cultural values.
  • Ability to communicate and engage effectively with children and youth, families, community members, and colleagues.
  • Strong organization and planning skills.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • A current student, aged 15 – 30 years old, enrolled in full-time secondary or post secondary studies for fall 2026.
  • Experience working in an education setting.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office software (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Current First Aid & CPR and Food Safe Level 1 are considered an asset
  • A valid class 5 driver’s license is considered an asset.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector screening.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Office-based with use of standard office equipment.
  • Indoor/outdoor.
  • Extended periods of standing or walking.
  • Occasional lifting (up to 40lbs).
  • Bending, kneeling.
  • Occasional travel for meetings, training and events.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work to meet community and organizational needs.
