SȾÁUTW̱ Representation in South Africa

It was an exciting and inspiring week (Oct 13-18) for SȾÁUTW̱ ‘s team which had been invited to attend the 7th International Marine Conservation Congress (IMCC). Two SȾÁUTW̱ fisheries staff and Chief Councillor Abraham Pelkey travelled a long way to showcase SȾÁUTW̱ ‘s incredible work on the QEN, T Marine Protected Area and the innovative kelp farm project. Their journey to share the successes of SȾÁUTW̱ community with international conservation practitioners and scientists was both meaningful and impactful. The team not only met new colleagues from around the world, but they also reconnected with old friends and allies from across British Columbia, including members of other First Nations who were also in attendance. It was an opportunity to exchange knowledge, strengthen relationships, and highlight the importance of Indigenous-led conservation efforts.

The true highlight of the event came during the final presentation. Chief Pelkey opened with powerful drumming and singing, setting the stage for a heartfelt presentation on the IPCA, followed by a video that gave voice to The SȾÁUTW̱ community. The audience was deeply moved, with many touched by the powerful stories and visions shared. It was a proud moment, showcasing SȾÁUTW̱ ’s leadership in protecting the ocean and its resources for future generations. We would like to thank our sponsors The Pew Charitable Trusts and The Ocean Foundation that funded their journey.
