The Social Development Intake Worker position is only open to Tsawout First Nation employees,
members and their families.

JOB SUMMARY

The Social Development Intake Worker (SD Intake Worker) is the first point of contact for new clients,
administering and implementing a variety of social assistance programs and community services. The SD
Intake Worker also provides administrative support to the Department in areas of information gathering,
client database, record keeping, to comply with all funding reporting requirements.

SCOPE

Responsible for administering and delivering various support programs ensuring that income support recipients receive regular, timely and accurate support payments in adherence to legislation, regulations and policies. No supervisory duties are required.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review client background information, interview clients to obtain case history and prepare intake
    reports
  • Assess clients’ relevant skill strengths and needs
  • Assist clients to sort out options and develop plans of action while providing necessary support and
    assistance
  • Assess and investigate eligibility for social benefits
  • Refer clients to other social services or assist clients in locating and utilizing community resources
    including legal, medical and financial assistance, housing, employment, transportation, day care and
    other serviceS
  • Counsel clients living in group homes and halfway houses, supervise their activities and assist in pre-release and release planning
  • Participate in the selection and admission of clients to appropriate programs
  • Implement life skills workshops, substance abuse treatment programs, behaviour management programs, youth services programs and other community and social service programs under the supervision of social services or health care professionals
  • Meet with clients to assess their progress, give support and discuss any difficulties or problems
  • Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of treatment programs by tracking clients’ behavioural changes and responses to interventions
  • Advise and aid recipients of social assistance and pensions
  • Provide crisis intervention and emergency shelter services
  • Implement and organize the delivery of specific services within the community
  • Maintain contact with other social service agencies and health care providers involved with clients to provide information and obtain feedback on clients’ overall progress
  • Mobilize and coordinate volunteer resources and activities of human service agencies, health care facilities, arts and sports, etc. organizations
  • May maintain program statistics for purposes of evaluation and research
  • Arrive to work on time and prepared for duties • Other duties as required by the SD Coordinator, or otherwise designated Managers

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  •  Grade 12 graduation (Dogwood or BC Adult Graduation Diploma)
  • Diploma in business administration or accounting preferred;
  • 2 years general office experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience developing and preparing a variety of written reports, spreadsheets, presentations and other documentation independently and from written and verbal instructions with Microsoft Office programs;
  • Experience maintaining records, filing and correspondence;
  • Valid BC drivers license, reliable vehicle and clean drivers abstract required;
  • A Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check is a condition of employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent interpersonal skills are required
  • Ability to network and keep in touch with clients
  • Working knowledge of routine office practices, systems and procedures;
  • Thorough knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, presentation and publisher using Microsoft Office;
  • Sound organizational skills and extremely detail-oriented;
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills including the ability to provide, obtain or follow clear, concise and accurate information orally and in writing (including spelling, grammar, context and structure);
  • Ability to exercise initiative and courtesy and to assess situations and recommend solutions;
  • Ability to work independently with limited direction, act on own initiative, set own priorities and meet tight or changing deadlines;
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and to exercise sound judgment and discretion when dealing with sensitive issues;
  • Ability to foster and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and external contacts;
  • Strong work ethic including the ability to take initiative; to attend work on a regular and consistent basis, and to demonstrate a collaborative approach to problem solving.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands

  • Extended periods of sitting at a desk and using a computer and other office equipment;
  • Lifting (approximately 25 lbs.), bending or stooping;
  • Potential for conflict from TFN members and training participants;
  • Will be required to attend appointments, meetings and community events outside of normal office
    hours.

Tools/Equipment

  • Office tools and equipment such as computers, laptops, scanners, photocopiers, calculators, fax machines, telephone system, and sets-up audio-visual equipment for teaching purposes;
  • Operates and maintains record management systems;
  • Computer applications such as databases, electronic mail, spreadsheets, and word processing.

Time Management

  •  Frequent deadlines.
